The dissemination of the scientific production generated within the different research areas constitutes one of the major research group activities, and therefore the GEDIME make a constant effort to disseminate the results of this research in two different ways: Firstly, by publishing articles, paper presentations, and monographs. Secondly, in order to spread information, the GEDIME organizes different activities as for example conferences, symposiums, round tables, collaboration with various mass media as well as producing audiovisual material, that allows us to disseminate GEDIME’s academic research through the Civil Society and the whole Society.
In the same way, GEDIME’s consolidated research activity clears the ground for the formation of new researchers; it promotes the fulfilment of Spanish and European predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships; it encourages the elaboration of doctoral thesis about immigration issues; it promotes networking between different European and American Universities in order to facilitate exchanges between both teachers and students; it offers educational formation about immigration to Ph.D. programmes, master’s degrees and postgraduate courses in various Spanish universities; it holds regular conferences and seminars on present immigration topics.
Research activities
GEDIME participates in research activities designed in cooperation with different Spanish and international universities. For instance, it is particularly remarkable the achievement of GEDIME’s participation in the Migcities Network (The Thematic Network on Migrants and Minorities in European Cities), coordinated by Dr. Malcon Cross (ERCOMER Institute director in Utrecht, Holland) from 1996 to 1999. Furthermore, the GEDIME has lead the Migration Workshop in the Spanish Sociological Association (FES) since 2000. It is also worth mentioning that since 1999 the GEDIME coordinates the Thematic Network in which research groups from seven different Spanish universities participate: Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Universitat de Lleida, Universitat de Barcelona, Universidad del PaÃs Basc, Universidad de Huelva and Universidade de A Coruña.
By keeping all the research groups specialized in migration subjects in touch with each other through the organization of different meetings and activities, we are able to share research efforts in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas, the academic debate and the production of knowledge about immigration from a wider and comparative viewpoint.
Moreover, the GEDIME offers data compilation and analysis services as well as expert consultancy in social intervention in immigrant issues and ethnic diversity management for private or state owned organizations. The GEDIME has its own office, situated in the Political Science and Sociology Faculty of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and it has all the requirements needed to develop its own projects.
