Novel treatment for tooth whitening: fast, efficient and safe

The global teeth whitening products market is expected to reach USD 7.40 billion by 2024. The industry is driven by the mounting consumer demand for clean and white teeth coupled with awareness about oral hygiene. Moreover, 99.2% of the people believe that smile is an important social benefit and growing consumer preference for over the counter products in countries such as Germany, France, UK, India and China are anticipated to drive the growth of the market over the forecast period.
Most teeth bleaching treatments on the market contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as an active ingredient, both compounds with oxidizing action. It is well known that this treatments lead to secondary effects like tooth hipersensitivity or gingival irritation due to the need of using high concentrations and long application times. Moreover, peroxides for tooth whitening have potential toxicologic effects due to oxidative free radicals. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide concentration above the 15% level does not increase bleaching effectiveness, and may increase the possibility for alteration of enamel hardness or surface morphology. Therefore, a faster, more effective and safer treatment than the existent ones is needed.

In order to improve treatment speed, the final whitening results, and/or the side effects, several studies are focused on using UV light or LED technologies, metal complexes or nanoparticles to catalyse the oxidizing reaction, even enzymatic bleaching has been explored. But these treatments don’t solve completely the secondary effects, the application of UV light is not recommended in the mouth cavity, the improvement achieved by LED is not homogeneously confirmed and, in the case of enzymatic bleaching, some studies demonstrated good results but using economically unviable amounts of enzyme (i.e. 2,5% of enzyme in the whitening gel composition) A new approach is presented, a totally new product with a different mechanism of action, consisting in a mixture of 2 ingredients. The new product needs lower concentrations of the chemicals when compared with the commercial products, acts faster and is more effective, which means it needs short application times.
