INTRODUCTION. The dual vocational education and training (VET) system is well valued at international level. However, in Spain the implementation of this option is still in an initial phase. This article analyses dual VET as a company strategy for safeguarding the skilled labour supply in Spain. Even though Spain has a large number of national and international automotive companies, there are few studies focused on automotive production and industry supply chain (Martínez, & Pérez, 2003). This study is situated in this field within the Spanish context, and more specifically in Catalonia, and it is part of a larger cross-national research project co-ordinated by the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training -BIBB-. METHODOLOGY. The goals of this article are: to analyse the motivations of this sector companies to become involved in VET; to assess the costs and benefits of this model; and to identify the main barriers for companies participation. In order to achieve them, the method used was case study, specifically eight case studies in the automotive sector. RESULTS. The results show that dual VET increases satisfaction of companies and employees and is a cost-effective way of recruiting and training professionals, although companies lack knowledge related to dual VET. Findings point towards the need for increased assistance during paperwork completion and a more thorough explanation of dual VET benefits to the workforce involved. DISCUSION. One of the conclusions of this article is the need to find ways to increase the flexibility to this system in order to fit the reality of these companies. The results of this study can be useful for politicians, companies and educational centres for rethinking specific elements of the system and improving them.
