Quantum information science takes a point of view on quantum theory as being not so much about waves and particles but about information. In this talk I describe and formalize this informational point of view; I argue that it is specific to classical and quantum theory and not compatible with generic probabilistic theories. I present a new axiomatization of quantum theory which takes the viability of this informational point of view as one of the postulates. Finally, I illustrate the practical applications for quantum information processing developed during this research.
