High Performance Computing and its fast evolution have fostered the innovation and the advance of several areas related to relevant social challenges as climate change and human health. Thanks to the application of high performance computing, it has been possible to treat different untreated diseases, it has been possible to design global warming or fire spread forecasting systems, developing new techniques for autonomous driving or determining the evolution of the universe.

Moreover, during the last years, we are witnessing an increase in the volume of data that is available as a source for scientific analysis. The amount of the data has a relevant impact in the current procedures of information management, invalidating some common practices. It is necessary to provide solutions to these challenges in the storage, filtering, analysis and data modeling since many current media do not allow a quality response in the short term.

The recent advances of the computational systems is producing very powerful heterogenous systems able to provide large computational capacities for those applications that make use of their components, as the accelerators. Also, these systems are universally available as services of the cloud computing providers. In addition to this, we have the extra request of resources coming from the application of machine learning techniques on large knowledge datasets. Finally, during the next decade we are going to see a new breed of open- source RISC-V processors in many computational centers to enforce European technological capabilities.

In this context, the current project, focusing on the research and development of new information technologies as a training base, addresses the challenges indicated in the framework of the society and the Spanish strategy for science, technology and innovation. In particular, we consider the following challenges:
-The environment, with the problems caused by natural disasters such as forest fires and the atmosphere modeling systems and their relationship with human activity
-Human health, with the research and development of new tools that allow for better and personalized treatment and monitoring of general individual health status
-Digital society, with the objective of improving infrastructures and mechanisms for acquiring knowledge in a safe way and respecting the privacy of social interactions

In all challenges we present a holistic view of the problems which considers aspects related to the available computational platforms, the efficient management of computational resources, the adequate models and paradigms of computation for our applications, in order to give answers to the challenges posed.
